You can follow the herd to Florida and Texas from California, New York, Illinois, and other over-taxed and crowded states. Or, you can move to uncrowded, beautiful coastal living in Mississippi. While your friends seem to be on the next train to a location that is or will become just what they are moving from you can be different.
The idea of packing up your home and leaving, for example, California because of high taxes, high cost of living, and more and moving to a place that is already the same “blows me away”.
So many people just follow others and find when they arrive that they never left. What I mean is that when you have determined to move from one state to another for various reasons most of which are negative, you would expect not to encounter the same negatives at your next destination. And, yet this is what is happening. Look at Austin, TX. it has become another California with high taxes, crowds, higher prices for homes, and all of the negative elements that people moved there to avoid.
Florida is looking more like New York City
Eldon Must is calling for more housing in Austin. I know he wants to accept high costs in CA but what he is doing is recreating Silicon Valley and all of its faults. This starts with a housing shortage and higher prices for homes. Exactly what is going on there and in other places now? Florida is looking more like New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles every day.
Austin is looking more like California
In a Fox Business article by Audrey Conklin dated April 3, 2021, there is a statement about more than 687,000 Californians relocating to Texas from 2010 through 2019. According to the article, more than 135,000 left California recently and then moved to the state. This article also goes into a large number of businesses and thus jobs moving out as well. If you think this is happening in California alone, think again. It’s happening around the country in primarily large cities and metro areas. People want to seek a better quality of life.
The Mississippi Gulf Coast is outside the box
If you truly want to escape the declining quality of life that your current home provides, you may want to seriously think outside of the box. The Mississippi Gulf Coast is outside of the box. We have beautiful uncrowded beaches, many miles of them. Lots of great restaurants, many serving fresh seafood caught in U.S. waters just off the coast.
Deer Island
The Mississippi Gulf Coast is blessed with several barrier islands that add to the cultural and recreational life of the Coast. Deer Island is one that is just across from Biloxi Beach, at one point just about 200 yards away. This is a primitive island with a forest and beaches. Tent camping is absolutely free, no permits and campfires are permitted. Read more here.
The culture here is terrific. I can state that without any doubt because I moved from California and I celebrate every day that I made the move to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. You can move to Ocean Springs, Biloxi, Gulfport, Bay St. Louis, Long Beach, Pass Christian, and other communities. New homes are available throughout the gulf coast along with historic homes with character. You can buy or build on or near the beach at a price that may shock you compared to where you are coming from.
Try living just a bit inland where there is a lot of space just a few miles from the beach. Vancleve is just such a place. Large homes, large lots, land for sale, and a great school district. Read more here.
Idaho, Memphis new hubs for Blue State escapees
Other destinations are also being overrun by people escaping cities and crowded urban areas and they include the Memphis area, Idaho, Denver, and more. The same situation as with Austin. Everyone goes there and everyone that goes to these places wants to bring all of the baggage e.g. demands for premier services, higher taxes, and a change in the culture that made those places special.
I have found that many people who have moved to the Mississippi Gulf Coast have embraced the centuries-old culture that pervades everything here from the term “y’all” to joining a Mardi Gras Krew. Our weather is generally warm all year, we do get the occasional frosty day in the Winter.
Yes, summers are humid but so are summers in most of the country. I find that many people put off outside work until the afternoon or just after a pleasant short rainfall.
Visit one of several small coastal towns
Go to one of the 12 casinos (more to come) where the AC is pleasant. Take a boat ride, the wind blowing through your hair will cool you down. Take a short drive to New Orleans and walk through the French Quarter in the evening. You can visit one of several Mississippi Gulf Coast towns where you are permitted to walk down the sidewalk with a drink as you move from one venue to another. We have vibrant nightlife here.
