Cafe New Orleans is a local favorite

The Cafe New Orleans is not a chain restaurant, let’s get that out of the way.  Visitors will probably not find this establishment by accident since it is not on one of the major tourist routes.  Locals know it. I have been there four times, twice we brought others to experience the food. The owners boast that this is “Cajun” cooking.

The  Cafe New Orleans is located in its building near the back bay and I110 in D’Iberville.  Incidentally, if you are not familiar with D’Iberville, it is located along Interstate 10 just north of Biloxi.  The city was named after the founder of the Mississippi Gulf Coast who arrived in 1699.

I found it when I dropped my vehicle off for some work.  The repair shop technician said he knew of the Cafe New Orleans and stated that the entire crew frequented the establishment for lunch.  One can assume this is an endorsement since there are other restaurants in the area. His suggestion that I try it was a good one.  If you are new to any area, ask a local about the best places to eat, they are often not found in shopping centers or on major streets.

No fancy tables

Stay away if you want fancy white cloth dining.  Shorts are welcome along with jeans and other very casual clothing.  The building itself is interesting with the signs and statue of the alligator inviting you in.  The special menu is on the outside wall so you see it when you step onto the porch. The facility was clean and neat.  According to the local authorities, it is an “A” rated establishment for meeting the health code. This was an excellent recommendation on its own.

There are tables and booths, pick your seat in the front dining room or the one-off to the side.  For those of you who hate blasting music, you will be pleased, they are more interested in serving food than entertaining you.

Menu: Cajun/Southern all the way

To the menu, it’s Cajun and Southern all the way.  Of course, it contains the obligatory catfish (or just fish), shrimp, red beans and rice, etc.  One of my favorites is the redfish which can be served blackened (yum). Alligator is on the menu as well in the appetizer section.  Please excuse me for linking Cajun and Southern together if you are the purest.  I am sure there is an entire discussion about the differences but for me and readers who are not familiar with the finer points let’s just conclude that both types of foods are offered here.

They have a special that is a combination of red beans and jambalaya.  I do not recall the name but it was great and enough for two or take the remainder home and eat it all week.

Do not leave without trying the fried dill pickles but do not eat them all or you will not have room for the other goodies on the menu including their specials.  The daily special is popular because you know which day you can have your favorite food.

The food is wholesome, just like mama made at home.  I was not raised in the South so it’s not like my mama’s food (wish it had been).

Try the “Gators Nibble” adult beverage

For those of you who require some refreshment beyond their sweet tea, you can order one of their specialty drinks.  Try a “Gators Nibble”, which I have not tried yet but it looks good. They do make good Margaritas.

How can I not recommend this restaurant since I have been back four times and oh, plan to return often?  The blackened redfish with salad and potato is only $14.99, one of the highest-priced items on the menu.  Final comments: Good food, good prices, good service, and nice facility so go there and enjoy.

Please read about our other Gulf Coast restaurants. I was not compensated for these reviews. I paid the cost for the meals and the owners were not aware that this blog was to be written.
